Hum unintentionally slaughtered the crowd on this particular Tuesday Night Out in L.A.: Laying waste a crowd that had nothing left for Bush by the time that heavily hyped band came on. The crowd surrounding me upstairs in the comfortable balcony was like a Stoic's convention waiting for Bush to do something. The string section was cute but the Beatles did that on Eleanor Rigby maybe 25 years ago.
Tuesday, 19 September was simply a case of david beating a quasi-goliath at their own game.
Matt Talbot is so fresh at this sort of thing that he turned his back on the crowd repeatedly during the set, partly because of his awareness of a very large crowd, or maybe his motor-skill, autistic bobbing might have made him self conscious. But it was totally cool, Matt. Next time face the crowd when you do that bobbing/strumming. Pete Townshend took full advantage of his self-consciousness and used it to his advantage when it came to handling crowd response.
The only Artist that could get away with turning his back on a crowd consistantly was Miles Davis. Miles wanted people to concentrate on the music he was generating and not on the red clad Man.
In Bush's defense, I would add that they were playing a third engagement due to overwhelming demand and probably they just shot their load the previous other nights and had nothing left to give.
Look for the Champaign, IL quartet's album, You'd Prefer An Astronaut in your local record store. Hum is a good band with a good album that they're out on the road in support of.
Catch Hum when you can as they begin to Headline gigs instead of knocking off Headliners.
